Each morning for the past four years, Steffany has woken up long before her peers to commute by train, bus and foot from her home near the Indiana border to her high school in downtown Chicago, spending 3-4 hours per day in transit. Her dedication also translated to several leadership roles, from co-founding and leading the Science Club to volunteering as a teacher’s aid with Metropolitan Family Services. With experiences ranging from a summer coding workshop with Girls Who Code to attending a Game Theory class at the University of Chicago, Steffany is blazing a trail in STEM fields in which other young Hispanic females are sure to follow. Besides her standard-setting work in the lab and classroom, Steffany enjoys the “spirit of the game” as an Ultimate Frisbee enthusiast, which she hopes to continue to pursue as a student at Harvard.
