- Salina’s gratitude, academic drive, and community awareness began after visiting family in Eritrea at a young age and seeing the poverty there; both of her parents immigrated to the US as refugees.
- As the first in her family to attend college, she graduated as salutatorian of her class of over 500 students and only had one B during her rigorous IB coursework in high school.
- Captain of her cross country team, president of National Honor Society, and secretary of her class, she was also a swimmer, part of Spanish National Honor Society, a literacy tutor, and on the speech and debate team.
- She plans to be a doctor who provides medical care in under-resourced areas.
