Mentoring economically disadvantaged youth on the importance of civics, empowerment, and advocacy.

Raised in Compton by his great-grandmother, Josiah Hankerson grew up in a household marked by love, resilience, and limited resources. Despite a turbulent early childhood shaped by domestic instability, he found strength in family, storytelling, and service. Motivated by the challenges his community faces, Josiah launched voter engagement campaigns, led youth organizing efforts across Los Angeles, and served on the LA City Youth Council. When his school lacked financial literacy programming, he co-created a business and college prep course, giving his peers tools to thrive beyond the classroom. Even while managing therapy appointments for his brother with autism and supporting his family, Josiah maintained academic excellence and community leadership. He envisions building coalitions that bridge underserved youth with opportunity, mentorship, and a renewed belief in their future. At Northwestern University, he will study Political Science and Black Studies to shape policy that reflects and empowers the communities he’s long fought for.
