Support the youth with the opportunity to continue into higher education.
David Acuna grew up in a hardworking Hispanic family that endured extreme poverty during a difficult chapter in Florida, boiling rainwater for basic needs before returning to Waukegan, Illinois to rebuild. Inspired by his parents’ persistence and motivated by a desire to uplift others, he became a dedicated scholar and leader, supporting his family while taking on rigorous academics and championing access to education through programs like Waukegan to College and Voice of Tomorrow. When the Schuler Scholars program that once promised him a path to college was suddenly defunded, he refused to let the setback define him reaching out to new mentors, rediscovering his drive, and leading a $60,000 renovation of his school’s college and career center to serve future generations. David envisions a world where no first-generation student is left behind, and where support systems empower communities to rise together. By studying computer science or business, he plans to build sustainable mentorship networks and resource hubs that transform college access for underserved students.
